American Division Seeding Criteria

• West Diablo playoff seeding is based on regular-season results against West Diablo League Teams and excludes results against Tri-Valley and/or East Diablo Teams. The top four teams (based on regular season results) will be seeded for the West Diablo Playoffs, single elimination tournament format.

Diocese Championships Invite

• Two West Diablo American Teams at each grade level (4^th – 8^th grade) will move on to the Diocese Championships, scheduled in late February.
• Diocese Bids & Seeding Logic:
  • The West Diablo Team that wins the West Diablo Playoffs receives an automatic bid as well as the #1 Diocese Seed from West Diablo.
  • The Top Ranked West Diablo Team (based on regular season results vs. West Diablo opponents) receives an automatic bid to the Diocese Championships.
    They will receive the #2 Diocese if they lose at any time during the West Diablo Playoffs.
  • If the Top Ranked West Diablo Team wins the West Diablo Playoffs, then the runner up team (who loses the West Diablo Playoff championship) will receive the #2 Diocese seed.

American Girls Division

• The top two teams from each of the three leagues (West Diablo, Tri-Valley, and East Diablo) advance directly to the Diocese Championship scheduled in late February.

For American Girls, Diocese seeding is based on regular-season results against West Diablo League Teams only and excludes results against
Tri-Valley and/or East Diablo Teams.

Dual Division: Bracket Selection

Bracket placement when there are 2 divsions at the National Level (Red & Blue).

• Gold Bracket:
  • Top two seeds in the red & blue divisions.
  • #1 Red vs. #2 Blue, and #2 Red vs. #1 Blue. Winners advance to the Gold Bracket championship.

• Silver Bracket:
  • Third and fourth seeds in each division (red & blue divisions).
  • #3 Red vs. #4 Blue, and #4 Red vs. #3 Blue. Winners advance to the Silver Bracket championship.

Single Division: Bracket Selection

Bracket placement when there is only 1 division at the National Level (Red).

• In National levels where there is only one division, the top four teams (based on regular season
  results) will be seeded for the West Diablo Playoffs.

National Tournament Of Champions (TOC) Invitations - Boys 4th - 8th Only

West Diablo Playoff Champions and Playoff Runner ups, are awarded the two invitations to the National Tournament of Champions.

Player & Team Eligibility: All players who have been considered regular season members of their team, who meet the Diocesan Eligibility standards as described in the Diocesan CYO Bylaws, Article V1, and who are verified by their Athletic Director, and have rosters on file in the Diocesan office, are eligible to participate.

The National Division team is defined as a parish’s second team in a particular grade. Leagues may determine their participant teams by the result of their national division playoff or by their regular season standings.

Coaches must carry their Coaches Current Year Certification cards with them.

If there are two divisions in National (red & blue) we will award the TOC invitations to the Gold Playoff Bracket Champions and Runner Ups.

Alternatives will be regular season champions and/or runner ups if needed, as determined by League President.

TOC starts on Feb 22nd - 23rd and concludes the following weekend, March 1st - 2nd.

West Diablo League Playoffs
The league provides the following for playoffs:

• Referees and scorekeepers (West Diablo coaches do not need to pay referees for West Diablo playoff games).
• Scorer’s Table (2 volunteers per game): Responsible and qualified high schoolers are needed and will be paid $20 per game.
• Awards for championship and runner-up teams.
• No entry fees for West Diablo playoff participation or attendance.

Oakland Diocese Playoffs

• Dates: February 22-23 (weekend following President’s Day) and March 1-2 (for teams that advance).
• Entry Fees: Collected at the gate for spectators.
• Scorer’s Table & Entry Fee Gate Collectors Needed: Responsible and qualified high schoolers are needed and will be paid $20 per game.

Additional Notes

• Super Bowl Sunday: Playoff games will conclude by 3:30 PM.
• President’s Weekend: No playoff or diocese games will be scheduled.

If teams finish the regular season with the same record, the following tiebreakers will determine seeding:

1. Tied Group Record (Win %) Results:
   • A comparison of two or more tied teams based on the outcomes of games played against each other (tied group).
     Within the "tied group" tiebreaker is based on win % of games played, games played against non-tied teams are ignored.
   • If the Tied Group Record Results cannot determine rankings, the system moves to the next tiebreaker.
2. Head-to-Head Results:
   • A comparison of two or more tied teams based on the outcomes of games played against each other. Games
     played against non-tied teams are ignored.
   • If head-to-head results cannot determine rankings, the system moves to the next tiebreaker.
3. Point Differential (Tied Teams Only):
   • The total number of points scored by a team minus the total number of points scored against them in
     games between the tied teams only.
     For example, if Team A and Team B split the head-to-head match-up, then if Team A won by 7 points in one game and Team B won by 5 in the other game, Team A wins the tie-breaker.
     This logic also applies if more than 2 teams tied in the standings.
   • A maximum point differential of 10 is used in this calculation.
4. Coin Toss:
   • If all other criteria fail to break the tie, the league office will conduct a coin toss to determine the
     higher seed.
